Beijing Foton Daimler Established, Auman GTL Heavy-duty Truck Launched
On February 18, 2012, Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive Co., Ltd. held the inaugural meeting. On the same afternoon, at China’s first world-class digital model factory of Second Auman Factory, Auman GTL, China’s first world standard heavy-duty truck with the historical honor of “Global Standards” and the mission of “starting an era of high-quality heavy-duty truck”, was officially launched to the global market.

[February 18, 2012, Beijing] Daimler AG (Daimler) and Beiqi Foton Motor Co., Ltd. (Foton) held the Conference on Establishment of “Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive Co., Ltd.” in Beijing to celebrate the conclusion of the joint venture negotiation. The first meeting of the board of directors of the joint venture was staged concurrently.

In January 2009, Foton and Daimler signed a cooperation agreement which eventually became a CNY 6.35 billion joint venture by July 2009. This agreement has significantly improved Foton’s production capacity for heavy-duty trucks.
In June 2009, Foton and Cummins Engine Co., Ltd signed a CNY 2.7 billion joint venture agreement to set up a factory with an annual production capacity of 400,000 engines. It will be one of the largest light-duty engine manufacturing facilities in China. Foton light commercial vehicles will be equipped with one of the best engines in the world in terms of emission reduction and performance.

Foton began its overseas operations in 2002. In 2010, Foton’s international sales exceeded 31,800 units. Foton ranks 5th as an exporter of Chinese vehicles and 2nd as an exporter of Chinese commercial vehicles. Compared with other Chinese companies, it has one of the most mature sales & service networks and already covers more than 120 countries. Foton is improving operations in overseas markets by heightening network communication efficiency, promoting local sales networks, setting up local offices and dispatching employees and analysts to the front line. Local factories have been established in many countries including Indonesia, Vietnam, Russia, Mexico, Pakistan, Turkey and Iran.

Foton has set up a world-class research center for alternative energies. It focuses on technologies for hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles and high-efficiency engines. It has already produced outstanding results. Foton is now the leader in China for alternative-energy commercial vehicles. New energy vehicle sales reached 2,000 units in 2010. These units were sold directly to municipalities and individuals, or used in sustainable transportation projects around the world. As with other elements of the Chinese automobile industry, Foton is in the process of greatly expanding its global presence. The company has set bold goals for the next decade and is investing heavily in overseas businesses. By 2020, Foton expects to become one of the world’s top 10 automobile manufacturers and to have created fully globalized service and distribution channels. At the same time, Foton expects to more than quadruple its annual sales figures from 800,000 units to 4 million units. Annual revenue is projected to reach 40 billion RMB.
